Blue Diamonds/B Defeat XLR8 16-12 In Defensive Battle
3 Oct 2016 by Bruce Taylor
[October 1, 2016] The Blue Diamonds/B team earned a hard fought 16-12 victory over previously unbeaten MI Sport XLR8 in a game that was a battle of defenses. The Diamonds set the tone early by aggressively going after the ball and creating turnovers to hold on to a 6-2 lead at halftime despite poor shooting. In the third quarter, XLR8 fought back to take the lead 10-8 at the end of the period. But in the end, the Diamonds showed they just wanted it more as Kay Shin, Rylie and Priscilla made key defensive plays down the stretch to turn the tide. Co-captain Priscilla (4 points, 5 steals, 3 rebounds and 1 assist) sealed the victory with less than 2 minutes remaining with the play of the game when she beat her defender at the top of the key with a nifty right to left crossover and finish to put Diamonds up by the final margin of victory. The victory still keeps the Diamonds (3 wins and 1 loss) in the hunt for the division title but they will most likely need to win their remaining games.
Co-captain Kay Shin (6 points, 14 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals) lead all scorers with her usual excellent all-around performance while Rylie (6 rebounds, 3 points, 1 steal and 2 blocked shots) was outstanding on defense. Other major contributions came from Sarah (3 rebounds and 3 blocked shots), Hailey (2 rebounds and 2 steals) and Neha (3 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 blocked shot).
